The rights of the American voter shall not be infringed upon. It’s a pretty great perspective to have but unfortunately things have quietly been happening behind the scenes to subvert the power of the American voter. Over nearly the past decade we have seen a fundamental attack being played out on the voting rights and abilities of the American people and it is happening from the Supreme Court all the way down to the social media that we take part in on a daily basis. Let’s take a look at a few of the people fighting against the American voter as well as the group looking to fight for them.
We can start by going back to 2010 when Citizens United appeared before the Supreme Court in order to argue in favor of loosening restrictions surrounding campaign financing. The goal of Citizens United, which was argued by conservative lawyer James Bopp, was to make the presentation that corporations should be considered as people and that their monetary political donations should be considered just an extension of their rights to free speech. Bopp succeeded in arguing this before the Supreme Court, citing old cases, and as a result the floodgates to dark money were opened up and began to pour into Washington D.C. Now American voters are getting ignored by their representatives because they are all paid off by corporate money.
End Citizens United is a political committee that is working hard to overcome the destructive agenda of Citizens United. End Citizens United has been raising funds like crazy over the past year thanks to the people’s general disdain for the work of Donald Trump as President. End Citizens United needs to raise funds in order to support legislators who are willing to fight for campaign finance reform. The ultimate goal for the team at End Citizens United is to introduce real legislation to the highest levels of government in order to have the Citizens United decision altered or repealed.
In order for End Citizens United to succeed they need to make some moves in the coming months. With the 2018 Congressional Elections around the corner, all eyes are on how progressive groups like End Citizens United chooses to prepare. In order to make sure they have a fighting chance, End Citizens United will be turning to the Alabama Special Election in order to support Doug Jones. Jones is a US Attorney who is running against the embattled Roy Moore for a Senate seat. Moore has been under fire lately for his bigoted and xenophobic comments. Jones is still an underdog in the election but the grassroots support that End Citizens United can offer should help close the gap at least a little bit.
